💐 The family behind the flowers

In partnership with

Hello, LO! 👋

(Wipes sweat off brow)

It has been hot. đŸ„” How are you holding up? Did this final heat streak push you into the “ok, bring on the rain and grey” stage of the summer?

On one hand, my dahlias are (finally) blooming. On the other hand, I moved away from Texas to avoid the triple digit heat game. I’ve got a little more capacity for heat in me but I’m quickly trending into PSL territory. 🍁

We’re making a couple of small tweaks to make LO Flow even more helpful: (1) you’ll now get it on Tuesday mornings, so you have more time to plan your week, and (2) we’ll share big events further in advance whenever we can. These ideas came straight from your feedback—so please keep sharing!

Local business news

Meet the bunch behind the bouquets

Vang’s Garden is a steady force of beauty at the Lake Oswego Farmers Market. They bring the seasonal goods — peonies, phlox, asters, dahlias, you name it. But there is a lot more to their story than beautiful blooms.

In 1986, Yang Vang and his wife, Ker Xiong, arrived in Oregon as refugees from Thailand after the Vietnam War. When Yang was laid off in 2002, he helped a friend with growing flowers and loved it. He was soon planting the seeds of his own. By 2003, with Ker’s steady support, Vang’s Garden was born.

Their seven daughters grew up among rows of dahlias, peonies, and sunflowers, helping after school and every Mother’s Day, when the entire family still gathers to sell hundreds of bouquets. Today, the farm spans 14 acres, but its heart remains the same: flowers grown with love, care, and a legacy rooted deeply in family.

Weekly outdoor events

Portland Flea in SE Portland (August 31, 11am-4pm)

On the hunt for some cool vintage clothes, jewelry, or home goods? Known as a place for creators, curators, and collectors, you’re going to find some treasures here.

Chapman Swift Watch in NW Portland (September 1-30, 6 pm)

Swiftie season is upon us. As a pit stop on their annual migration from Canada to South America, thousands of Vaux’s swifts would roost in Chapman Elementary’s giant chimney in the evening in a wild bird vortex. But last year, the Swifties mixed it up and opted for smaller roosts dispersed across on the east side. Will the pattern persist this year? TBD but an interesting development, nontheless.

Rose City Comic Con in Portland (Oregon Convention Center, September 5-7)

While the primary focus is comics, Rose City Comic Con also showcases gaming, sci-fi, cosplay, anime, fantasy, and everything in between. Events range from Star Trek fan meet-ups to a Goonies cast reunion spotlight to LARP battlegames. It will be impossible to leave here without a smile on your face.

Mark your Calendars

LO Wine Walk (October 4) Walk downtown LO while sipping wine. An annual tradition.

The Lakeside 🏡

House of the week

12850 Fielding Road | 9 beds, 12 baths | 9,950 sq ft

Price: $9,950,000 💀

Details: This house is absolutely palatial and currently holds the crown for the most expensive house on the market in Lake Oswego (you may bow down and kiss the ring). It also has a forest-themed playroom, complete with a treehouse bunk and a rope bridge, because an actual treehouse outside simply won’t do. And don’t forget the 12+ garage spaces cause you know you got a FLEET if you’re buying this house.

A few of our favorite things

Book: Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey

A philosophical exploration of the meaning of rest in a capitalist society. In a world where proving your worth through exhaustion is the standard, Hersey’s book shows us a different path. In her words, “I understand that many reading this book have never sat with the grief and pain associated with attaching your worth to productivity and money. This fact alone is enough reason to rest.” Take a beat with this one.

Show: Hunting Wives on Netflix

We are not very far into this show so I can’t speak to the entire story arc, but this Texas murder mystery is entertaining and wild. It is high-drama, queer, sultry, and oftentimes silly in its extremes. As a native Texan myself, I also endorse the Texan Republican wives portrayal - that big Southern energy, hair, and femininity, with a dash of trouble, is dialed in. Opinions can be pretty polarized on this one so would love your take!
