Hello, LO! 👋
Did you hear about the recent naked bike ride protest in Portland?
The federal government certainly had something to say about it, with U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson describing it as “most threatening” demonstration he has seen against federal immigration authorities in the city.
While the government continues to use really strong language about the state of things in Portland ("it’s getting ugly”), protesters continue to show up in inflatable frog, unicorn, axolotl, and banana costumes.
To me, the naked bike ride protest is about the most quintessentially Portland way to protest that I can think of. Where do you stand on this one? Are bikes and body parts a step too far or perfectly Portland?

Local business news

If you’re looking for the best soft serve in Portland, Cheese & Crack is the spot. Their soft serve is spectacular, as is their toppings and sundae game. Think cheddar dust, chocolate malt dust, beet dust, and wildness like that on top of the ice cream. On the sundae side of the house, they run a monthly special. This month is the “Eye Scream” sundae — two layers of ube pudding and oreo crumble, soft serve, and finished with raspberry purée and a candy eyeball. They also have cheese boards (hence the name) but I’ve never made it past the soft serve. Trust me on this one.

House of the week

2088 Crest Drive | 4 beds, 6.5 baths | 7,568 sq ft
Price: $6,500,000
If you’re considering this house, you need to like four things: (1) marble, (2) wine, (3) the color black, and (4) saltwater. This beauty comes with a saltwater infinity pool, an insane amount of climate-controlled wine storage, a black and moody kitchen, and enough marble that you could probably carve like 3-4 more Davids and become the Michelangelo of Lake Oswego. 👀

A few of our favorite things
Book: The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty
This novel is intense, brutal, and captivating. You’ll enter the dark world off four teenagers who aged out of foster care and live in "The Rabbit Hutch" apartment building and the topsy-turvy lives they live. You’ll get to know them deeply as individuals, while also winding through a story of urban blight. This book is devastating — both in the beauty of Gunty’s prose and also the inevitable path of destruction of the four teen lives.
Psychologist and bestselling author Dr. Angela Duckworth — famous for her work in defining grit — joins Mel to discuss what drives achievement. You’ll learn why grit – the combination of passion and perseverance – matters more than talent, intelligence, or motivation alone. Dr. Duckworth’s definition of talent alone is worth the time to listen to this one.
