Artificial intelligence (AI) is a hotly debated topic these days. Add in kids and education and things get even spicier.
The Lake Oswego School Board recently adopted its first AI policy in classrooms and tried to strike a balance between the usefulness of the technology and the guardrails needed to prevent studentsā over-reliance and abuse of its capabilities. The policy also seeks to create a consistent use of AI across classrooms so students donāt have wildly different educational experiences.
As a parent of young kids, I want my kids to use technology for their benefit and not fall behind their peers. As a person with professional experience in the world of AI, I know there are a lot of potential risks with AI use, especially for users without full adult reasoning and understanding.
Thereās also the recent MIT study that looked at brain wave activity of three groups asked to write an essay using ChatGPT, Google search, or no internet-based support. The ChatGPT cohort had the lowest brain wave activity and consistent underperformance on cognitive tests. Small sample size but chilling results.
Thereās not a clear right and wrong with the AI policy in schools, in my opinion. Do I want my kindergartener using it? Nope. But a teen? Probably but with educated, invested adults around them teaching them how to discern the facts from hallucinations.

Oh wait, I mean it has over 20 fire features in it so youāll never be in the dark as you trek across the 9,200+ square feet. It also has a stainless steel spinner in the garage for 360 degree rotation of your favorite car. I didnāt even know this was a thing before finding this house. Book: 10x is Easier than 2x by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy
Iām currently reading this and really enjoying the mindset shift. Essentially, 2x is linear improvement that takes what youāre currently doing and simply adds more effort or time. In contrast, there are very few paths that can get you to a 10x goal, so it requires letting go of what is not working and stripping down to the core activities that get you where you want to be.
